Contini George Street is Victor and Carina Contini’s flagship Italian restaurant, situated, as the name suggests, on Edinburgh’s beautiful George Street. The opulent dining room, with its high ceiling and stunning cornicing is the perfect setting for a meal, or even just a few drinks if you need a pit stop during a busy working day.
Relaunched with a brand new menu, décor and dining experience earlier this year following a £250K refurbishment, the new menu focuses on small sharing plates. Owner Carina Contini commented, “When we first opened, our menu was a reflection of the Italian food passed on to us from our grandparents – hearty meals like lasagne, pizza, and carbonara. While these are all delicious, the way people eat has changed. Now, guests want to try lots of different dishes, sharing them with friends rather than ordering a traditional starter, main course and pudding. So we have created a menu with sharing in mind, featuring fresh, delicious flavor combinations, which still showcase the very best Italian ingredients and the pick of Scotland’s larder.”
This is a refreshing move when so many restaurants, especially Italian ones, stay stuck in that rut of serving the classics. Yes, we all love the classics, but not all the time, and if we want them, every other Italian restaurant is on hand to serve them to you. Its a bold move to look at how people’s eating habits are evolving and change your menu accordingly. Bold and smart.
Clockwise from top left: Fresh orcchiette with Italian piccante sausage, chantarelle and dried mushrooms, rocket, fresh cream and Parmigiano Reggiano DOP | Buffalo mozarella arancini with sundreied tomato salsa | Salame Calabrese, roasted aubergine, mint crème fraîche, pomegranates and pistachios | Raw spinach leaves, cooked lemon, roasted almonds and fresh pomegranate seeds.
With fresh and local ingredients used along with traditional Italian produce, each dish bursts with flavours and contrasting textures to create a taste sensation with every bite. And the dishes look as pretty as a picture.
Hot homemade doughnuts with chocolate sauce are certainly not to be missed! Even if you aren’t in the mood for a big meal, at least stop off for a coffee and these doughnuts for an afternoon treat.
Whether you are after a hearty meal or a light bite to eat, Contini George Street delivers. The service is polished and non-intrusive, the wine list offers a choice of over 55 Italian wines by the glass and bottle, and the menu has something for everyone. This is well worth checking out if you want bold and exciting Italian flavours and excellent service.
